Playa de Famara

Playa de Famara

Lanzarote - Canary Island, Spain

Kitesurf

Famara is known as one of the most spectacular beaches in Teguise, Lanzarote. It starts in the La Caleta de Famara village and extends across six kilometres to the foot of the mountain range of the same name. On the west it forms a cliff and the Mirador del Rio viewpoint, which was built by the artist, architect, painter and sculptor César Manrique, is further north. From there you can see the breath taking views of La Graciosa Island and the Chinijo archipelago. The trade winds have formed important dunes with sparse vegetation, and despite being a very popular beach, its large size means that it doesn’t get very crowded.

It can be said that Famara has a dual aspect depending on the tides. At low tide, large shallow puddles form on the shore and at high tide there are areas where the sand disappears and waves reach the cliff’s volcanic rocks. Lanzarote airport is in the capital, Arrecife, which is just 25 minutes away in the south of the island. To get there from the airport, the best options are to get a taxi or rent a car. Renting a car is the cheaper option and it’ll give you more flexibility to move around the rest of the island. There is public transport available although the connections aren’t very frequent.

Conditions

From April until October, the trade winds hit constantly and the water is flat or choppy. During the autumn and winter there can be waves up to 3 metres, but no wind. There are a lot of rocks in the northern part and it’s only possible to kitesurf at certain times, depending on the tide. It’s only recommended for intermediate and advanced levels. There is about 50 metres from the start of the beach to the shore at low tide. It’s a very safe place and it’s easy to get in and out of the water. The wind blows for 90% of the year, between N and NE. Be careful of the strong currents.
